Since there is very few of these threads (ACTA) I thought I'd get you all to support the campaigns against ACTA. SOPA was just a smoke screen, ACTA is worse. Facts:
-SOPA/PIPA may currently be on benched for the time being, but ACTA is global and far worse.
-ACTA is global
-ACTA not only blocks websites but can lead to full surveillance of your online activities
-ACTA does not have the campaigning against it that SOPA/PIPA did. We need to STAND UP now more than ever.
-ACTA not only affects the internet but healthcare, tourism, and trade.
-ACTA must be stopped.
-ACTA has been passed in 31 different countries! Canada, Japan, U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Morocco, South Korea, Singapore, the European Union, and 22 of it's membering countries
What ACTA can do once signed:
*ISPs have to proactively police copyright on user-contributed material. This means that it will be impossible to run a service like Flickr or YouTube or Blogger, since hiring enough lawyers to ensure that the mountain of material uploaded every second isn't infringing will exceed any hope of profitability.
*ISP's have to cut off the Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability. This means that your entire family could be denied to the internet -- and hence to civic participation, health information, education, communications, and their means of earning a living -- if one member is accused of copyright infringement, without access to a trial or counsel.
*The whole world must adopt US-style "notice-and-takedown" rules that require ISPs to remove any material that is accused -- again, without evidence or trial -- of infringing copyright. This has proved a disaster in the US and other countries, where it provides an easy means of censoring material, just by accusing it of infringing copyright.
* Mandatory prohibitions on breaking DRM, even if doing so for a lawful purpose (e.g., to make a work available to disabled people; for archival preservation; because you own the copyrighted work that is locked up with DRM)
How you can help: Signing may just be a number on the internet, But it really is a big deal if you show that you hate ACTA and want it stopping, or even go as far as to contact your local mp then you can show the government what you think of ACTA and that you want it to stop!
