and im with sgtyoshii by not updating it istantly puts you offline and gives you default stats no matter what it says online. You have both offline and online profiles bit like halo, yet you dont level offline you stay level 1.

I dont think it lets you access any of the online portions of the game, including stats, if you are offline. He just said "game update." BF3 has title updates like every other game, but also large updates that have to be downloaded from the store/marketplace. You dont have to download these to play online, but there are far less servers available so you probably couldn't play.
