Default What to do?

I'm not sure if I should create a forum with freeforums or making my own.

Pros & Cons: Free-Forums

Pros: $15/year for .com domain, easy to create, simple setup process.
Cons: No large personalization, expensive premium to remove branding.

Pros & Cons: Legit Site
Pros: Large options of personalization, more options.
Cons: More expensive hosting, hard to setup (for me), possibly hard to maintain.

Any suggestions?

Firstly do you have a successful idea that will make people want to use your forum? If not then I suggest you do not.

But do you honestly think that they will bring in members? I see loads of forums start up but hardly any of them have something which will keep it going, the only ones which survive are the ones which have a unique idea.

I'm not really worried about that right now.

I want suggestions on which route to take.

That is the first thing you want to worry about when creating a forum. What the point in spending money and wasting a fair amount of time if it will just die within a week.

This, if it has ANYTHING to do with gaming your going to have issues keeping members since that "market" is pretty much all taken.

Why is hosting more expensive?

Don't get free forums, yes you can use a free forum software but don't use pre setup ones.
