Default Disc drive issues

First off, I'm new to the site and this is my first post, so give me some slack lol.

Im fairly new to repairing xbox 360's, and have run into a problem. I bought an Xbox 360 (white) for $9 that would have a problem with reading games as DVD's. It reads CD's and DVD's just fine though. I had my old white 360 sitting around that has the E74 error so I replaced the DVD drive in the $9 Xbox with the E74 xbox drive. It is doing the exact same thing. Any suggestions?

Also while i was looking at the wiring in both systems i noticed that they were slightly different. The $9 xbox is 2 years newer (Sept. 2008 ) and has seperate wiring for the fans and disc drive. The E74 Xbox (Oct. 2006) wiring had a harness for the Fan wiring and the drive. Any of this make a difference?

If you take a disc drive out of an Xbox and put it into another you need to change the drive key. By the sounds of it the Xbox you bought doesn't have the original drive in it therefore can not read games. If that is the case then the Xbox is basically just a DVD player or good for parts.

To get the key you need flashing gear but like I said if its not the original drive then you have no chance at all of getting the original key back.

Only thing I can really suggest is checking if its JTAGable and JTAGing it if so because then you don't need a disc drive and it will be worth more than the standard Xbox.

Google how to check your Kernel and if its JTAGable. If you need anymore help PM me.

Well I switched them around, it still plays games, it just doesnt want to read them half of the time. But I'll do some research on that and will definitely pm you. Thanks!

It can't play games if you haven't changed the keys either either your tripping or theres something weird going on because I know 100% that it needs the original key, I modded Xbox for 3 years now.

Do you know how to flash an Xbox?

Honestly I know nothing about Xbox 360's except how to play them. I'm more of a car guy, but when I get my tools I'll record me taking it apart and show the 2 drives working.

Sounds like the xbox you brought for $9 has had a bad flash and the drive key is gone, also if you put a new drive in it you have to flash the stock key to it other wise you will only be able to play CD's or DVD's, Like your circumstances right now, If you have no idea what im on about google it

Also the $9 Xbox doesn't read hard drives, but reads USB flash drives. Should be getting the other Xbox and tools today, so hopefully I can show you. But this is not the first time I have heard this, I talked to a guy at a local electronic repair shop and he said it shouldn't be working either. I have no clue guys lol seriously no clue.
