The next Xbox will ship to retailers in late October or early November of next year with six times the processing power of the Xbox 360, sources close to the project have told IGN.

Following initial reports from tech blogs Fudzilla and SemiAccurate, our sources have confirmed that mass production of the system's GPU will indeed begin by the end of 2012 but will not, however, be based on AMD's 7000 series Southern Islands GPU. Instead, the processor will be derived from the 6000 series, which was introduced last year. More specifically, it will be akin to the Radeon HD 6670, which offers support for DirectX11, multidisplay output, 3D and 1080p HD output. The chip currently has a market price of upwards of $79.99.


In real terms, the Xbox 720's raw graphics processing power is expected to be six times that of the Xbox 360 and will yield 20-percent greater performance than Nintendo's forthcoming console, the Wii U.

Developers are likely to receive development kits based on the system's final configuration in August. Projected pricing for the console was not provided.

Just announced and they are almost a year behind PC's already. Can't even run Metro 2033 at max settings. Not only that, it's barely better than the Wii-U in terms of performance. Anyways, enjoy your tiny upgrade, I guess.

You need a GTX 580 to run Metro 2033 on Dx11 Highest settings.

Wow, release with a year old GPU. Not clever. I guess you can understand that they need to do extensive testing with the hardware to ensure security, but still...

They should make it so you can buy GPU upgrades. Like a mini PC deal. That would make them more money as they could price them ridiculously, but at the same time add more lifespan to the console.

Well I know that PCs are better. But they really can't afford to put a 200-500 Dollars GPU inside of the Xbox. Because it will drive customers away.

Games have gone up in price, people still buy them. Consoles have gone up in price, people still buy them. They could at least get a card from 2011 that doesn't suck.

I don't care much except for the fact that all of the "Wii-U is going to get blown out of the water!" was wrong and that since the Wii-U will actually have games, next gen could easily go to Nintendo (another year for Nintendo to reign) and force them to go back to amazing games. Now Nintendo just needs to partner with Steam and it will be the next gen's winner.

Imagine...N64/Gamecube quality games with 2011 graphics and Steam for their online and a screen with no HUD...
