INTRODUCTION (please read!)
I'm assuming if you're looking at this tutorial, you already know how to flash your drive. Follow the tutorials on this site or in the PDF manual inside the ZIP file I have attached. Seems like a lot of people have been having trouble getting these lt max burners to work. I want to make sure that you guys don't have to go through the same **** that I did to finally get this working. I have successfully burned a copy of Battlefield 3 on a cheap-ass Memorex. I don't care what you damn fanboys preach. I've been using memorex for all of my backups and not a single one has given me a coaster (and I've spent a considerably less amount of money on DVDs). I honestly think this Verbatim hype is purposely made because some forum members and maybe even Team Xecuter have shares in Verbatim.... but it's purely speculation... Anyway,
I'll explain the issue that I believe a lot of you are getting. I will also give you a clear solution so that you do not have to go through the work that I did.
-------------------------
Programs and files you will need Download Here *Everything you need is attached in the link above in a ZIP file (including the original LT Max firmware files. Look at the attached PDF tutorial if you don't know how to flash to your drive yet.
My Uploaded version of LT Max is already fixed for Memorex disks. All you need to do is flash it.
NOTE: If you have something besides Memorex or Verbatims, you will need to change the write speed yourself using a program called Media Code Speed Edit.
Cause of the error:
I believe that in order for cheaper disks to work, you must make additional changes to your burner drive's firmware. Memorex disks must be burned at 2.4X. Anything faster will turn your precious disk into a useless coaster. BUT! As I learned from trial and error, you can't just pick 2.4X in imgburn .... You have to change the right speed for the drive's firmware as well as changing a few things in imgburn so everything will work smoothly. Again, if you are using memorex, all you need to do is download my firmware, flash it to your drive, and change a few settings on your burner and imgburn. That's it. Then your backups will work.
-------------------------
PROCEDURE:
If you are just using memorex,
1. Download my zip file and unzip LTMAX Memorex file.
2. Flash it to your drive as you normally would, following the instructions in the PDF.
3. Skip to step 6.
If you are using something else besides memorex or verbatim,
1. open Media Code Speed Edit (MCSE)
2. from MCSE, open the firmware corresponding to your drive inside the "Original firmware" folder that you unzipped.
3. Once it is open search through the list of "DVD9" entries until you find the disk type that you are trying to burn. You'll notice that the burn options to the side will say "4x, 8x," and sometimes "16x". We will change this to 2.4X.
(If you don't know your DVD type, imgburn will show you on the right-hand side of the screen when you pop in a blank disk.)
4. Double click the disk format that you want to replace. When prompted, choose "RICOHJPN" that has a write-speed of 2.4X.
5. Save your modified firmware somewhere. You'll need it soon.
------
6. Open Flash_utility in the IXtreme burner max folder and flash your modified firmware to your drive. Once finished, exit Flash_utility.
7. Open EEPROM_utility.exe, hit the options tab, and make sure your settings look like this:
Force Hypertune: OFF
Online Hypertune: ON
Overspeed: OFF
Smartburn: ON
8. Once that is done, go into imgburn. go to tools> settings> write> and make sure to UNCHECK the "Perform OPC before write" option!
THIS IS IMPORTANT! If you do not do this, your burner will take a **** and you will be left with a pretty coaster for your drinks.
9. Once all this is done, open your .DVD file in imgburn and burn that sucker. CONGRATS!
If this has helped you, please push the thank button. I'm currently looking into providing an OSX tutorial as well as soon as I figure it out.
From all of my previous experiences, I can safely say that Windows is a god-awful operating system. Why do people use this atrocity?
Also, if you're worried about the disk not working, rip it to your hard drive or make a new copy. Don't go spreading false rumors that nothing works except the almighty verbatim. I have verified my burns and this method works. I did all my burning and flashing on a macbook pro using the x360usb pro and the ck3. I used imgburn via Windows XP in VMWare Fusion.
