How to dual boot Linux + Windows 7 and Comparisons between the two
!! - Hey xboxMB - !!
Well i love windows, but Linux... Linux is just amazing! and today i thought i'd share a little bit about Linux, a comparison between windows and Linux and then show you how to get Linux plus keep windows!
What is Linux?
Linux refers to the family of Unix-like computer operating systems using the Linux kernel. Linux can be and is installed on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from mobile phones, tablet computers and video game consoles, to mainframes and supercomputers. Linux is a leading server operating system, and runs the 10 fastest supercomputers in the world. Use of Linux for desktop computers has increased in recent years, partly owing to the popular Ubuntu, Fedora, and openSUSE distributions and the emergence of net books with pre-installed Linux systems and smart phones.
One place members of xboxMB would have seen Linux would be on a JTAG'ed xbox, that's of course if you knew that JTAG's can do so much more than just host 10Th prestige lobbies on MW2 and actually explored those possibilities.
People who are considering making a change from Windows to Linux or Linux to Windows or even having both, want to know the advantages and disadvantages of each of the operating systems so this is a very good chart to show you the differences!
How to dual boot Windows and Linux
I will cover two methods in this tutorial, for both Methods i will be using Ubuntu as the example because it is probably the Linux distribution beginners would want to start with.
The First Method: Is a good one if you're not to sure about Linux and just want to test it.
Ubuntu have made a neat little program called Wubi. What it does is install Linux inside your windows OS and upon restart you can boot into Wubi/Ubuntu. In essence its a trial version, if you don't like it you can boot up windows and UN-install it.
The Second Method: Is a straight install on the the hard drive of both Windows and Ubuntu, it is a little bit harder to do and requires certain abilities but if you follow the tutorial word for word you should be fine.
- COMING SOON -
Method One: Trial Ubuntu - using Wubi
Download wubi.exe from the ubuntu website: Ubuntu Windows Installer
Tip: hit the Big orange button
Once downloaded follow these instructions
1) If a security message like this appears, click 'Continue' to proceed with the installation.
2) To install Ubuntu, all you need to do is choose your username and password. Note that you have to enter your password twice to make sure you typed it correctly.
After choosing your password, click 'Install'. The files will be downloaded and installed automatically.
3) Wait until Ubuntu is downloaded and installed. Please note that the whole process can take a while – the downloaded file size is 700MB
4) When the installation is complete, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Click 'Finish' to restart.
5) After your computer restarts, choose 'Ubuntu' from the boot menu.
6) Success! now have a play around on Linux and if you don't like it go into windows and uninstall it. Should be in C:\
School and my social life made me forget all about this thread
I'll look to finishing part two in the next couple days
Method one can also be treated as a full install.
