Worst comes to worst, go buy a SIM card for 20$ at any store and go pay as you go, or simply get the SIM card to get past the "Insert SIM card/Attach to iTunes" screen.

What IPSW are you using?

Ten to one, seeing as how you thought you had a 3G/3GS, you were downloading the wrong IPSW, since there is a 3.1.3 specifically made for the iPhone 2G.

You followed the tutorial, downloaded the proper 3.1.2 IPSW and the two bootloaders and went through it all and nothing?
