so my friend found an old xbox in his closet that is flashed with ixtreme 1.6. would it be safe if I updated the console or should I do something first? like will my console be flagged or just have the drive flashed back to stock?

Be safe, reflash the drive. Then update.

What ThizzKidd said, reflash to stock then update the console then flash to Lt+ 3.0.

Anything older than LT+ 1.91 would throw and error and flag, flash to stock as stated above.
