Activision 'not planning' Call of duty Black Ops beta
Sep 01, 2010 - 11:28 PM - by XboxMB News
Quote:
Treyarch has shot down increasingly hot rumours that a Call of Duty: Black Ops public beta is set to arrive on Xbox Live and PSN. Speaking to CVG at the Black Ops multiplayer reveal event in LA this morning, Treyarch community man Josh Olin confirmed that Activision's not planning a public beta at the moment and said that current console trials are "internal only". "We're already doing an internal beta with all sorts of Activision studios - thousands of people are participating in our beta," he said. "That's the only formal beta that we're planning at the moment. There were a lot of misconceptions, confusion and Google ads. There was some speculation that we'd be launching a public beta tonight - that's not happening. The beta is internal only right now." He added: "Keeping it internal is very helpful for us. It allows us to move a lot faster on our builds, so if we want to change something we can easily push out a new build within the company to anyone who has one of these dev kits. "Call of Duty is so much this big mainstream thing that everybody at Activision is playing this game."

UK is safe from Xbox Live Subscription Price Hike
Aug 31, 2010 - 10:34 PM - by XboxMB News
Quote:
Microsoft has today confirmed that Xbox Live users in the UK won't be seeing a rise in the prices for 3, 6 and 12-month Gold subscriptions.Following the unexpected announcement of an increase in price for Xbox Live Gold membership for users in the USA, Canada and Mexico, many users in the UK were worried about whether or not they'd have to be forking over extra cash. However, a Microsoft spokesperson has today CVG:"The price rise only relates to single-month subscriptions in the UK."As we reported yesterday, UK users purchasing 1 month codes will have to hand over £1 extra.Users in the USA, Canada, Mexico and several other locations will be having a much bigger gap in prices. For instance, 12-month subscriptions will go from $49.99 to $59.99- a massive increase indeed.Said price hikes will become effective on November 1st, 2010.

Stores Breaking Halo: Reach Release Date
Aug 28, 2010 - 2:13 PM - by XboxMB News

Halo: Reach has just over two weeks until it's aloud out of those big brown boxes and into Xbox 360 consoles across the globe, however according to an anonymous tipster- stores are already selling the game. The tipster, who remains anonymous, has informed JPS that a retailer (no store name was given) is selling the game- breaking the embargo date that Microsoft strictly enforced. As of now, it's anyone's guess as to why the store is handing out copies- maybe a retailer trying to make a few extra bucks, or maybe just a mix up with the dates.

Sources: Kinect beta kits going out, dashboard update live for partici
Aug 26, 2010 - 6:43 PM - by XboxMB News

That email purportedly sent out by Microsoft a couple weeks back inviting its recipients into a Kinect beta program? Yeah -- it was legit. Joystiq has received corroborating evidence confirming the program, including pictures of the promised Kinect-enabled dashboard update running on a participant's retail console. In them, you can clearly see the flatter presentation, new mini-guide and revamped Avatar editor -- complete with a re-proportioned Avatar.

Our tipsters clearly didn't read the included guidelines, pictured in the gallery bellow. Apart from the laundry list of methods via which participants aren't supposed to talk about the program, there's confirmation that Kinect hardware is indeed part of the beta, "is being packed" and will presumably be on its way to testers soon. These same sources report that the beta support site mentions Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports and Kinect Joy Ride as titles they can expect to receive for testing purposes.

We'll have more on the program as its participants continue to refuse acknowledgment of Microsoft's terms and conditions.

Redesigned Xbox Avatar appears ready to Kinect with you
Aug 26, 2010 - 5:31 PM - by XboxMB News

You know how sometimes people go "away" for the summer, and then when they come back they look ... totally different? Well, Major Nelson's Xbox Live Avatar didn't go anywhere but has seemingly undergone one such full body makeover -- as evidenced by the above comparison between the bobble-headed likeness we had come to associate with the Xbox Live director of programming and his current Avatar. It would appear that Major's Avatar and perhaps other "VIP" Avatars are the (beta) test subjects in a forthcoming effort to transform the currently cartoonish Avatars into -- to put it candidly -- virtual figures that would look a lot less goofy in a motion-controlled sports game.

Recently, Rare senior programmer Nick Burton told OXM UK that Xbox Live Avatars would be proportionally redesigned to better connect the physical movements of Kinect players to their on-screen Avatars. Presumably, this "Avatar 2.0" update would occur in time for Kinect's November 4 launch and possibly as part of the expected, annual fall update of the Xbox 360 UI. The new trimmer Avatars are visible in Rare's Kinect Sports screenshots below.
