Don't worry about it crashing or freezing. The were some problems with people not being able to open apps, but that was because of iBooks.

Jailbreak it and then install the Corona Untether...

I also upgraded from an od jailbroken 3G and now I have a 4S. I jailbroke it with no issues. Winterboard works fine and it doesn't slow it down at all. You might get problems if you install things...
